I create delicate, textured watercolor paintings of whimsical imagery inspired by landscape, nature and biology. I use synthetic Yupo paper which does not absorb paint in the same way as regular art paper, allowing me to manipulate the watercolor after it has dried to create surface texture. My images of slightly mutated organic things like trees, seed pods, and stones have a playful sense of humor and display my quirky curiosity about the universe, creation, spirituality and human purpose. By accentuating the personality and narrative of plants, rocks, water, and other living things, my work contemplates our approach to agriculture, civilization, and industrialization, along with the global harm perpetuated by human systems of survival. I hope the humorous and narrative quality of my paintings will entice the viewer to wonder things like: where do baby trees come from? How do we really know what the universe is shaped like? What are the inner longings of stones, and how do they feel when the river runs dry? Do plants and minerals need friends too? I try to keep my subjects somewhat ambiguous; rocks might really be eggs, drops of water, or eyeballs. Plants might stretch their branches into the fingers of a hand crawling out of the earth or take the shape of a mouth gulping down the rain falling from the sky.
